A guide to Newcastle

by - April 24, 2016

Despite a lot of stigma around Newcastle being just a giant bar/club crawl city (we aren't all like the cast of geordie shore!) it is a really beautiful city with so many great places to visit. Here I've listed a few of my favourite spots for if you find yourself in the area...

Food

Jam Jar Jesmond

Probably the biggest thing I miss about living in Jesmond this year is this place. They are probably the best burgers in newcastle. Go on a tuesday for burger night and get 2 burgers and fries for 14 pound. The burgers always come pink, juicy and full of flavour, and with a varied menu there is something for everyone. They do great cocktails too, all served in a jar for a fiver; it's a great place to come with friends!

The Bridge Tavern

If you're in Newcastle on a Sunday you HAVE to try the sunday lunch at the Bridge tavern. The beef is pink and so tender, the veg is delicious and they give you an extra jug of gravy, what more could you want! Also you'll see towards the back of the pub they brew their own beers and ales for those who want to try some unique beers to wash down their food.

Olive and Bean

This is the perfect lunch stop for your shopping trip. Right next to Grainger Market, this cafe serves up some incredible paninis, salads and sandwiches. But, the main reason to come here is for the cakes, oh my the cakes. From peanut butter and salted caramel tiffin to malteaser rocky road it has one of the best cake selections I have ever seen. Just be warned you may not be able to pick just one!

Hop and Cleaver

If you love good american comfort food, this is the place for you. You pick a board with 2 different meats and sides (the pulled pork, brisket and mash are to die for) and then attempt to try and tackle the mountain of food that arrives in front of you! But seriously the food here is amazing quality, well priced and is such a lovely building to sit in, I would highly recommend a trip!

Drinks

No. 28

This hidden cocktail bar is the small, less commercial version of the popular botanist. Hiding above grainger market, when you walk inside you're greeted by palm tree wallpaper, fairy lights and garden style furniture alongside a killer cocktail menu. It feels very 70's glam and is the perfect place to head with some friends for a few drinks.

The Dog and Parrot

If you like good music, cheap drinks and a good atmosphere this is the place for you. From the record sleeve covered ceiling, to the disco balls and Quadrophenia mural on the back wall it is THE bar to head to for all you music lovers. With great music, pool tables and 2.50 doubles it's the perfect place to head to before a night out.

Lola Jeans

Not only does lola jeans do amazing food, their cocktail menu is incredible too! With gorgeous, bohemian style interiors and mish mashed furniture it is a great place to sip cocktails in your favourite dress and feel just a tad sophisticated.

Tyne Bar

Just a bit out of the city centre, in Ouseburn, is the tyne bar which is probably the best place to go for a drink when the sun is out. Sit on benches outside in the sun, overlooking the Quayside and once the sun sets you can often find lots of local bands performing under a disco ball.

To Do

The Cluny

If you're here overnight check out the gig listings for the cluny. They do great food and drink here too and with a different local act on almost every night, it's a great place to go as an alternative to a night out. I've seen the likes of peace, glasvegas, catfish and the bottlemen and frankie & the heartstrings here and in such a small venue the atmosphere is always amazing.

The Boiler Shop Steamer

If you happen to be in newcastle when this is on you have to go! For a few pounds entry you enter an old boiler house filled with amazing food stalls from burgers to crepes to coffee martinis. With live bands and DJ's performing all day and night it is an amazing place to go with a group of friends and sample some local foods and of course have a few drinks.

The Baltic

The baltic is a great place to visit while in newcastle. Even if modern art isn't your thing it's always great to have a wander round, check out the shop which sells amazing books and prints and have some cake in the coffee shop. The observation floor has breathtaking views of the city and quayside and if you're feeling fancy head to the six restaurant for afternoon tea while soaking in killer views.

The Seaside

If you fancy a trip to the seaside hop on a metro to tynemouth or whitley bay and have a wander along the beach. From novelty arcades to incredible ice cream (Delaval ices is beyond!), and of course fish and chips you can have a great day out when the sun is shining. And if you are making a day of it head to the mini golf in tynemouth before having a wander round tynemouth market. The market takes over the metro station and is full of stalls selling antiques, vintage clothing, local foods and so much more!

Lane 7
A retro inspired bowling alley, lane 7 is the perfect place to go with a group of friends. From bowling, ping pong, photo booths and even beer pong there is something here for everyone. And make a night of it with a meal in the american style restaurant that makes great comfort food and have a few drinks after in the bar- the boozy milkshakes are always a good idea.

Shopping

Pet Lamb Patisserie

If you want to pick up a few sweet treats before heading home, stop here! A little shop hidden in grainger market, they make mouthwatering cupcakes and brownies all displayed so beautifully that you can't possibly leave without buying at least two!

Retro

A little vintage shop hidden just off grey street you can find some real gems here if you look hard enough. Also there's RPM records just next door if you fancy a browse around there too.

Fenwick

You have to look round fenwicks when you're in newcastle. From the gorgeous new food hall to the incredible beauty hall there's something for everyone for all budgets. And if nothing else you can drool over their vintage chanel bag selection!

Reflex Records

I would say this is probably the best record store in newcastle. You'll find pretty much anything you want here and if they don't stock it, they'll order it in for you. And come records store day this is THE place to visit to pick up some limited edition vinyl.
